Save the useful evidence
Keep the displayed number, date, time, voicemail, text, and the caller’s claim. If money, credentials, or a code were requested, record that detail without continuing the conversation.
Do not post a lookup profile as proof of the caller’s identity. Spoofing and reassignment can attach the event to an innocent number owner.
Block at the device and carrier level
Use the built-in call or message blocking controls on the device first. Carrier spam tools and apps with documented caller-ID, risk, or blocking functions may add another layer, but they can miss new campaigns or flag legitimate calls.
Blocking one displayed number may not stop a campaign that rotates or spoofs numbers. Continue to screen unknown contacts and silence notifications when repeated attempts create pressure.
Send the report to the right place
Use FCC consumer guidance for unwanted calls and texts and FTC channels for fraud reporting. Contact a bank, payment service, or account provider immediately when money or credentials may be at risk.
A report should describe the behavior and loss, not assert that a person named by a lookup committed the act. That distinction keeps the report accurate when caller ID or public-record matching is wrong.
