Triage the contact before investigating it

Let an unfamiliar call go to voicemail when possible. Save the number, time, message, and any claimed organization; do not provide codes, account details, or payment while the caller controls the pace.

Urgency, secrecy, unusual payment methods, and threats are stronger risk signals than a polished caller-ID name. If the caller claims to be a bank, agency, or business, end the call and use a verified number from its official site or your statement.

Build context from more than one source

Search the exact number, then use a reverse-phone service for possible identity, location, line type, or spam clues. Truecaller and Radaris document caller-identification and spam functions; Spy Dialer documents spam or scam clues in a typical result.

Conflicting results are a reason to lower confidence, not pick the most detailed profile. Even matching sources may rely on the same stale public record, and caller-ID spoofing can make the displayed number unrelated to the caller.

Verify, block, and report

Return contact only through a channel you independently trust. If the contact remains unwanted, use device or carrier blocking, preserve evidence of repeated calls, and report the incident through relevant FCC or FTC channels.

Do not confront the person named in a lookup or publish personal details. A lookup result can be incorrect, and the number may have been reassigned, shared, ported, or spoofed.
